Jennifer Chan

Dr. Jennifer Chan — Department of Educational Studies, UBC

Politics in the Corridor of Dying documents the emergence of diverse community-based organizations engaged in AIDS advocacy worldwide and critically evaluates their role in changing global AIDS governance in the past 25 years. The underlying theme is the impact of AIDS activism on challenging the legitimacy and breaking open the door of four systems of power—Science, Market, Governance, and Community. Dr. Chan discusses a broad spectrum of contemporary socio-political issues including stereotyping; criminalization of HIV transmission; treatment literacy and advocacy; fight against Pharma and patent oppositions; UN division of labour in AIDS; politics of PEPFAR, the Gates Foundation, and the Global Fund; and community infighting. She proposes four pillars of policy recommendations in diversifying global governance, operationalizing human rights standards, moving beyond the existing intellectual property regime, and decolonizing community development.
